All Bont Cycling shoes feature replaceable front toe bumpers and heel pads, which can be installed by following our guide as per below.
Bont Cycling Vented toe bumpers are glued to the front of the shoe and as such, care must be taken when removing old bumpers and fitting replacements.
Follow these steps for installation of toe bumpers and heel pads. The same glue can be used to replace Vaypor S
Front Bumper - Vented, original and Vaypor 2023
Check the size of your replacement bumpers matches the pair on your current shoes.
Use a small amount of acetone or nail polish remover on a cotton pad or similar to dissolve any glue and assist in removal of existing bumpers. Warning: damage can occur to shoe upper if acetone is applied directly to material. Use sparingly! Apply the acetone right where it is needed. If necessary, pry the toe guards off the sole slightly to apply the acetone onto the underside.
-
Allow acetone to dry completely and take note of position of old bumpers.
-
Place front bumper onto shoe and assess exact position required for proper installation. You should be able to note the exact position left by the area covered by the original bumper.
-
Apply a small amount of Loctite 401 (not included) or equivalent to the inside of the new bumper.
-
Position the bumper directly onto the shoe with as much accuracy as possible. Loctite 401 will set quickly, so careful placement of the bumper onto the shoe is key for a great result.
-
Make minor adjustments to bumper and hold firmly against shoe for a few minutes.
-
Repeat steps above for matching shoe.
-
Leave to dry for minimum 12 hours before riding.
Heel Pads - Road
-
Check your heel pad set matches the style fitted to current shoes and ensure all parts are received: 2 x heel pads, 2 x heel pad bolts.
-
Take a Phillips head screwdriver and undo the heel pad bolt from the underside of the shoe. If the bolt fails to remove easily, remove the inner sole and check the sole pad t-nut is in place. If spinning, keep it in place by using a pair of circlip pliers or similar. And if necessary, replace sole pad t-nuts.
-
Remove existing heel pads by using a small amount of acetone to help dissolve glue keeping it in place (if applicable).
-
Clean surface thoroughly using acetone or nail polish remover on a cotton pad or similar. Allow to dry and evaporate entirely before moving onto the next step.
-
Push the included bolt through the heel pad bolthole and apply a small amount of Loctite 401 to the contact surface of the heel pad.
-
Place a drop or two of Loctite Threadlocker Blue 242 or equivalent into the threads of the sole pad t-nut. This will keep your new heel pad bolt from coming loose.
-
Place heel pad directly onto sole and ensure it is aligned as per original heel pad.
-
Secure carefully by tightening the bolt to the base of the shoe. Use a little common sense here, as the heel pad is rubber and the bolt is steel. Don't overtighten it!
-
Repeat for matching shoe.
-
Leave to dry for minimum 12 hours before riding.
